How to choose her name

  • Say all her names together. English name, surname and Chinese, Malay or Tamil name, out loud.
  • Check the pinyin and the dialect. Grandparents may say the name in Hokkien, Teochew or Cantonese. Make sure it sounds good there too.
  • Count the strokes only if it matters to your family. Some families check stroke counts or ask a name consultant. Many don't.
  • Look up every character's meaning. A beautiful sound can hide an odd meaning.
  • Agree on one spelling before you register the birth on LifeSG.
  • Picture it printed. Short names fit neatly on rompers and name blocks, which helps if family plan newborn gift sets with her name for the full month celebration.

FAQ

English names like Chloe, Sophia, Charlotte and Olivia are common, often paired with a Chinese name such as Xin Yi (欣怡) or Shi Qi (诗琪). Malay families often choose Aisyah, Nur or Hana, and Indian families Ananya or Priya. In the 2020 Census about 74% of residents were Chinese, so English plus Chinese names are the most common mix.

Do Singapore babies have both English and Chinese names?

Many Chinese Singaporean girls do: an English given name, the surname and a Chinese name, for example Chloe Tan Xin Yi. It is a family choice, not a rule. Some families register only a Chinese name, and others only an English one. All of these are accepted when you register the birth.

What does Xin Yi mean?

欣怡 (Xin Yi) combines 欣 (joyful) and 怡 (happy, pleasant), so it means "joyful and happy". 心怡 (also Xin Yi) uses 心 (heart) instead.

Why do some names have dialect spellings like Bee Leng?

Before Hanyu Pinyin became standard, names were usually spelled the way they sound in the family's dialect. 美玲 is Mei Ling in pinyin and Bee Leng in Hokkien.

How long do I have to register my baby's name in Singapore?

Births in Singapore must be registered within 42 days, online through LifeSG. Agree on the name and its spelling before you start, because it is printed on the birth certificate exactly as entered. Parents who have not chosen a name yet should still register the birth on time.

What are classic female names in Singapore?

Older Singaporean women often have names like Mei Ling (Bee Leng), Shu Fen (Siok Hoon), Hui Ling, Siti, Rokiah, Margaret and Doris. Many Chinese names from that generation use dialect spellings rather than Hanyu Pinyin. Some parents now pick these names again for a vintage feel.

Antara nama yang popular ialah Aisyah, Nur, Hana, Sofea, Insyirah dan Zahra. Ramai anak perempuan Melayu di Singapura mempunyai dua nama, contohnya Nur Aisyah atau Siti Khadijah, diikuti "binte" dan nama bapa.
